IP Master of Legal Studies (IP MLS)

IP Master of Legal Studies (IP MLS)

An online IP Master of Legal studies (IP MLS) includes a foundation of legal principles (one year) and a specialization in intellectual property (one year). As part of the specialization, the student can select one of two tracks: one focusing on clinical or trademark experience, and a second focusing on a capstone project.

Many companies run into challenges when protecting their internal innovations and the expansion of their ideas and products. To meet these challenges, companies often turn to intellectual property specialists and patent agents to meet their specific needs. Lincoln’s flexible online IP Master of Legal Studies (IP MLS) program deepens your understanding of the IP laws on patents and prepares you for an expansion of your own career and marketability as an IP professional.

Graduates of Online IP Master of Legal Studies have many career opportunities in various industries. Career examples include but are not limited to:

  • Patent Agent (Requires Patent Bar Exam)
  • Technology R&D Manager
  • Product Licensing Professionals (Patent Brokers)
  • Individual Inventors
  • Product Entrepreneurs

Professional Development IP MLS Path

The Clinic track includes participation in the Lincoln IP Clinic, where students are trained on patent or trademark services, and, in turn, provide services for free to clients that are accepted into the clinic. The clinic experience track allows for students to be mentored one-on-one with an active practitioner and gain direct experience working with the USPTO.

The Capstone Thesis option track includes research and preparation of a research paper focusing on a subject associated with intellectual property. The capstone project allows for students to be mentored one-on-one with faculty members and be published by a local law journal.

The IP MLS program requires 33 units and two years to complete.
